Founder of this consulting practice which specialized in helping clients envision, design, and build future software products and services.


CEO, Wonderbuilders, Inc.     2010-2014
One of three founders of software start-up specializing in immersive 3D experiences for education and collaboration. Responsibilities included all aspects of running the business including project oversight, personnel management, creative direction, concept development, software design, sales, marketing, training, and technical support. Work involved close collaboration with educators and other end users in the design of environments for medical training, ESL education, economics educations, virtual museum exhibits, and business collaboration as well as the software features to support those environments.


Visiting Scientist, MIT CECI    2010-2015
Worked with students and faculty on education technology projects at MIT's Center for Educational Computing Initiatives.


Principal Investigator, Sun Microsystems     1991-2010
Founded and directed four research groups within Sun Labs: Wonderland, focused on immersive collaboration, Collaborative Environments focused on creating next-generation communication and collaboration tools, Network Communities focused on collaboration of geographically distributed teams, and Speech Applications focused on designing and building prototype conversational interfaces. Responsibilities included strategic planning, day-to-day project management, engineering management, generating project ideas, user research, software design, reporting writing, demos, and presentations.


Project Coordinator, Brown University, IRIS    1983-1991


Founding member, lead interaction designer, and project lead for Institute for Research in Information and Scholarship (IRIS). Responsibilities included planning, project leadership, user experience design, and usability testing for a large educational hypertext project called Intermedia. Projects involved working closely with faculty and student users, collecting feedback from those users, setting up and managing a workstation classroom, and writing grant proposals.


Research Assistant, Brown University CS Dept.    1982-1983
Worked as a Computer Graphics research assistant to then Department Chair Professor Andries van Dam. Authored an interactive electronic repair manual, demonstrated state-of-the-art graphics software, and contributed to a capital campaign effort. Wrote widely-sited article in IEEE Computer in 1985 called “Reading and Writing the Electronic Book” that anticipates the World-Wide Web.


Volunteer Work
Board, Weston Art & Innovation Center    2016-present
Responsible for publicity and website creation/maintenance. Work closely with other board members on planning, programming and fundraising. Also, teach photography and act as the organization's photographer.


Board, Weston Media Center     2018-present
Work with other board members to oversee this independent public access television station.


Exec. Director, Open Wonderland Foundation     2010-2017
As a founder and Executive Director of this non-profit organization which serves as the governing body for the Open Wonderland open source project, responsibilities included day-to-day operations, community management, and keeping the board of directors abreast of new developments.
